Meet Sarah Arikan, Owner and Hotel Manager of Berwick Lodge. Become a part of the exciting story behind an award-winning country house hotel, restaurant and events venue.
To create a good story, you need an exciting beginning and a happy ending with an engaging storyline in between. For Sarah and Fevzi Arikan, their story is still being written as they continue to embark on exciting new chapters in their life at their award winning country hotel, Berwick Lodge.
Their story so far has been an interesting one; they didn’t dream a dream of owning one of the most sought after wedding venues in the South West, or that people would come from far and wide to dine in their 2AA rosette fine dining restaurant. Instead, they were living a busy life in Norway, running after three boisterous children whilst embarking on an everlasting love story of their own.
It was upon their return home to the UK that the first chapter was written, as Fevzi, who is originally from Turkey, grew hungry for a project that allowed him to indulge in his passions and skills in their new life in England. It just so happened that one evening in 2003, which coincidently just so happened to be Valentine’s Day, they stumbled upon a property in the local paper and the rest you can say is history. And so the story began…
Just over five years later the love of two cultures has been blended together to design and build a ‘home from home’ for guests at Berwick Lodge. Both Sarah and Fevzi have put a huge amount of time and effort, not to mention finance, into ensuring Berwick Lodge could be everything they envisaged it to be.
Fevzi became a builder practically overnight and learnt the art of carpentry to enable him to make the 26 new doors needed for the much sought after privacy and exclusivity in and around the hotel. He also designed all the interiors and continues to make ongoing improvements today, as well as doing all the painting and brick-laying in and around the grounds. All this is complemented by Sarah, with her creative flair, not to mention her fabulous collection of vibrant Doc Martens which always elicit an admiring comment or two.
With a collection of beautiful rooms and living space, luxury and comfort have been combined throughout. British culture has been merged with Turkish through a fabulous display of fabrics and furniture. With artifacts from Istanbul and artwork from Sarah’s grandmother, it’s the small-added touches that add a refreshing, homely ambiance to the place as a whole.
