A HIDDEN SECRET JUST WAITING TO BE DISCOVERED

At Berwick Lodge we try to combine comfort and high quality service with resilience and sustainability.

As a hotel we are aware that our actions have consequences on the environment and as a result we are acting to continuously improve our sustainability best practices throughout all our business activity. We are committed to achieving the best environmental and social sustainability practices, for the benefit of our Berwick family, wider community, and the planet; today and for future generations to come.

While ethical, responsible and sustainable tourism have always been at the heart of our business ethos, we have made great strides since introducing the permanent role of Sustainability Advisor in 2021, showing our long-term commitment to positive change. It’s been a learning curve, and we are all still educating ourselves as we go, but we are making little changes all the time.

It’s the small things we’re trying to change first: using local ingredients; growing produce in our kitchen garden & flowers in our cutting garden; encouraging plant-based choices; fighting food waste; using 100% organic gardening methods; supporting our bee hives & Bristol’s biggest colony of house martins; our electric company car & on-site electric car charging points; encouraging online wedding planning; supporting staff mental health with ‘Hospitality In Action’; and supporting and purchasing through small and local businesses and second-hand wherever possible.

In 2023 we received our Silver Green Tourism Award and have also been shortlisted two years running for the South West’s Bee Bold awards.

We have also recently installed solar panels on site, to produce renewable energy for the hotel and to help with Berwick’s wider carbon reduction and sustainability plan. We plan to keep investing in greener energy wherever possible for us, as one of the biggest areas of concern identified in our recent carbon report.

Working together with our suppliers, guests, and community, we aim to keep improving on our sustainable growth, and to fully integrate environmental best practices into our everyday activities.

Our commitments:

  • To reduce, reuse, and recycle, in line with the circular economy model
  • To keep reviewing our supply chains, and to source responsibly and sustainably
  • To be energy efficient
  • To give back to and maintain the natural environment and biodiversity around us
  • To share knowledge with, and raise awareness amongst our team, guests, and local and industry communities
  • To be fully transparent about our journey, to avoid ‘greenwashing’

If you have any suggestions which may help us to further improve our green actions, we welcome them greatly. Just email info@berwicklodge.co.uk with the subject line ‘Green suggestion’
